The PDA Guide -
Prescribing, Dispensing and Administration

The PDA Guide is a guide on prescribing, dispensing and administering medicines to the elderly in nursing homes and helps achieve the highest possible level of pharmaceutical care of patients; it is designed to complement the British National Formulary (BNF). The primary aim of the guide is to ensure the most Effective, Appropriate, Safe and Economic use of medicines by the elderly.

The overall aim was to try and achieve as small a publication as possible with a limited, but reasonably comprehensive, range of medicines included in the guide. The guide is laid out in the format of the British National Formulary (BNF) to ensure ease of reference. It contains comprehensive notes based on key information from many different sources and considerable effort has gone into ensuring that the information is relevant to nursing staff.

In addition to key prescribing information, a description of each medicine, and a photograph for easy visual identification is included. This interlinks to the Biodose Patient Information Chart (PIC) and the Biodose Medication Administration Record (MAR) Chart. Furthermore, for patients with dysphagia, details of which medicines can be crushed and which ones cannot, is included for ready reference. In addition, for those patients who hold medical cards, products are identified as to which are reimbursed under the GMS scheme and which are not.
